The short answer

NFU Mutual, which underwrites its own motor policies, asks new claims to be reported 24/7 on 0808 134 4232 (option 4), while existing claims use 0800 282 652 (option 4). Third-party claims against an NFU Mutual policyholder have a separate dedicated number.

VIP Claims — independent

Was the accident not your fault?

If another driver was at fault, you may have options beyond claiming on your own NFU Mutual policy. VIP Claims Ltd is an independent accident management company and can check, free of charge, whether we're able to manage the claim for you. Eligibility depends on the circumstances of the accident, and nothing is guaranteed.

This is a VIP Claims contact number, not an NFU Mutual number. VIP Claims Ltd is not affiliated with or endorsed by NFU Mutual.

Step by step

How to start a NFU Mutual claim

  1. 1Notify NFU Mutual immediately if your vehicle has been involved in an incident, even if you don't intend to claim yourself
  2. 2Call 0808 134 4232 and select option 4 to start a new claim
  3. 3Have your details and the incident information ready

Before you call

Information to have ready

  • Your name and address
  • Vehicle registration number
  • Details of any third parties involved
  • Date and circumstances of the incident
  • An indication of the claim's value, such as purchase price, replacement cost or extent of damage
  • Your contact number

Our car accident checklist covers what to record at the scene.

What happens next

After you report the claim

  1. NFU Mutual will give you help and advice, including handling any claim made against you by another party
  2. Windscreen repairs and replacements can be booked with one of NFU Mutual's preferred glazing suppliers
  3. A Motor Claims Guide is available explaining what happens next and which partners you may hear from

Costs

Excess and your no-claims discount

Specific excess and no claims discount figures are set out in each customer's own policy schedule and were not published on the pages reviewed.

Your policy schedule sets your compulsory and voluntary excess — check it before assuming an amount. See also our guide to non-fault claims.

Staying mobile

Courtesy car or replacement vehicle

Courtesy car entitlement is set out in individual policy terms and was not detailed on the claims pages reviewed.

Policy courtesy car

Provided under your own cover, usually only while the car is with an approved repairer, and typically a small standard model.

Non-fault replacement

Where another driver is at fault and you are eligible, a like-for-like vehicle may be arranged as part of the claim against them.

Credit hire

A hire vehicle supplied on credit, with the cost pursued from the at-fault insurer. Subject to eligibility and your obligations if the claim fails.

None of these is automatic. Read more in our replacement vehicle guide.

Repairs

Approved repairers and your choice of garage

NFU Mutual works with preferred glazing suppliers, including National Windscreens, Auto Windscreens and Allscreens Nationwide, for windscreen repair and replacement bookings; other repairer arrangements are confirmed when a vehicle claim is made.

Your options

If the accident wasn't your fault

After a non-fault accident you generally have three routes. Which suits you depends on your cover, your excess, and how quickly you need a vehicle.

Claim through NFU Mutual

  • Simplest single point of contact.
  • Your excess is usually payable first and recovered later if liability is admitted.
  • The claim is recorded against your policy, which can affect renewal even when you are not at fault.

Claim against the at-fault insurer

  • No excess payable to your own insurer.
  • You deal directly with the other side, which can be slower if liability is disputed.
  • You are responsible for evidencing your losses.

Use an independent accident manager

  • VIP Claims can handle repairs, recovery and the claim where you are eligible.
  • Services are subject to eligibility and the circumstances of the accident.
  • Not guaranteed, and not a substitute for your policy obligations.

Whichever route you choose, most motor policies require you to notify your own insurer of the accident, even if you do not make a claim on your own policy. Check the notification condition in your policy wording.

Questions

NFU Mutual claims: frequently asked questions

What if I'm not making a claim myself?+

How is claiming through NFU Mutual different if I hit an NFU Mutual policyholder?+
NFU Mutual provides a dedicated third-party claims number and information on the benefits of claiming through them directly rather than your own insurer.

For claims the phone numbers are the same, but for other policy queries you should use your local agency office's own contact details, found on your policy documents, rather than the Mutual Direct number.
