How to Make an RAC Insurance Claim

Varies by policy; RAC acts as intermediary/administrator and arranges cover with a panel of insurers (per RAC's privacy policy, the underwriting insurer is separate from the intermediary)

The short answer

RAC car insurance claims are started through My Account, where you're directed to the correct phone number or online claims journey for your specific underwriting insurer. There isn't a single universal RAC claims number because cover is arranged across a panel of insurers.

Official RAC Insurance claim contacts

These are RAC Insurance's own contact details, published on RAC Insurance's website. They are not VIP Claims numbers.

Claim online at RAC Insurance
  • Log a claim

    Official RAC Insurance contact number

Log in to My Account and select the claims option; you're given a phone number or online claim link specific to your insurer

Policy types: RAC car insurance customers are underwritten by different panel insurers, so the specific claims phone number or online journey depends on which insurer sits behind your policy; this is confirmed to you inside My Account. RAC Black Box Car Insurance is arranged and administered by Ticker.

VIP Claims — independent

Was the accident not your fault?

If another driver was at fault, you may have options beyond claiming on your own RAC Insurance policy. VIP Claims Ltd is an independent accident management company and can check, free of charge, whether we're able to manage the claim for you. Eligibility depends on the circumstances of the accident, and nothing is guaranteed.

This is a VIP Claims contact number, not an RAC Insurance number. VIP Claims Ltd is not affiliated with or endorsed by RAC Insurance.

Step by step

Before you call

Information to have ready

  • Policy number
  • Vehicle registration
  • Details of the incident
  • Third-party details if applicable

Our car accident checklist covers what to record at the scene.

What happens next

After you report the claim

  1. Track your claim status under the claims status section in My Account
  2. Additional information requests may need to be handled via web chat rather than My Account

Costs

Excess and your no-claims discount

An excess only applies to windscreen claims if the screen needs replacing rather than repairing; no claims discount is unaffected either way. Choosing Plus or Premier cover means an uninsured driver incident won't affect your excess or no-claims discount.

Your policy schedule sets your compulsory and voluntary excess — check it before assuming an amount. See also our guide to non-fault claims.

Staying mobile

Courtesy car or replacement vehicle

A courtesy car isn't guaranteed in every case, for example if your car is written off or stolen; optional Guaranteed Replacement Car cover provides a replacement vehicle for 14 or 28 days in these circumstances.

Policy courtesy car

Provided under your own cover, usually only while the car is with an approved repairer, and typically a small standard model.

Non-fault replacement

Where another driver is at fault and you are eligible, a like-for-like vehicle may be arranged as part of the claim against them.

Credit hire

A hire vehicle supplied on credit, with the cost pursued from the at-fault insurer. Subject to eligibility and your obligations if the claim fails.

None of these is automatic. Read more in our replacement vehicle guide.

Repairs

Approved repairers and your choice of garage

Repairer arrangements depend on which underwriting insurer is behind your policy; details are provided once a claim is logged in My Account.

Your options

If the accident wasn't your fault

After a non-fault accident you generally have three routes. Which suits you depends on your cover, your excess, and how quickly you need a vehicle.

Claim through RAC Insurance

  • Simplest single point of contact.
  • Your excess is usually payable first and recovered later if liability is admitted.
  • The claim is recorded against your policy, which can affect renewal even when you are not at fault.

Claim against the at-fault insurer

  • No excess payable to your own insurer.
  • You deal directly with the other side, which can be slower if liability is disputed.
  • You are responsible for evidencing your losses.

Use an independent accident manager

  • VIP Claims can handle repairs, recovery and the claim where you are eligible.
  • Services are subject to eligibility and the circumstances of the accident.
  • Not guaranteed, and not a substitute for your policy obligations.

Whichever route you choose, most motor policies require you to notify your own insurer of the accident, even if you do not make a claim on your own policy. Check the notification condition in your policy wording.

Questions

RAC Insurance claims: frequently asked questions

Why doesn't RAC have one single claims phone number?+
Because RAC car insurance is arranged across a panel of insurers, the correct claims contact depends on which insurer underwrites your specific policy, and this is shown to you in My Account.
What claims history do I need to declare?+
You must declare any claims from the last 5 years, including non-fault claims and incidents where no claim was made, as these are considered risk factors.
How do I add a claim I'd forgotten to declare?+
Contact RAC's customer team directly via the Contact Us page so your claims history can be updated accurately.
Does RAC Black Box Insurance work differently?+
Yes, RAC Black Box Car Insurance is arranged and administered by Ticker rather than through the standard RAC panel process.
